Mir Nowruz

Mir Nowruz is known with his pen name Vazeh and titled as Rend-e Lorestan (Rogue of Lorestan), He has poems in both Luri and Arabic, but he is mostly known for his fluent and anecdotal single poems that easily capture the heart of the audience.

He was born sometime between 1103 to 1105 AH that coincides with the rule of Suleiman of Persia, in a region now known as Pol Dokhtar. Mir Nowruz spent an adventurous youth and had many love affairs when he was young, which inspired him to write his charming poems. He traveled through many cities of Lorestan. It was during one of his travels that he encountered a fair maiden. He went through many troubles but was finally able to meet her, but she rejects her with the excuse of honor and virtue. Later, as Mir Nowruz was walking in the gardens of the region, he saw his beloved along with another handsome man.

He was deeply affected by this incident, and wrote poems that are still recited by people “You used to say that here (the woman’s heart) is a mountain that no one can enter! Now is it not that it is full of bargains /you used to say your heart is made of stone, now is it not the market place of tradesmen?” His book of poems is full of direct and indirect references to Lor culture and Lorestan land. In addition to the Lor words that can be found all through the book, there are many hints to the beliefs, rituals and traditions of Lor culture. Mir Nowruz transcends his birthplace and its people to the extent of worship “I will not exchange a leaf from a Lorestan tree with the whole world”, “How pleasant is Khorramabad, the Lor city. All the Lor people have sweet tongues.” “I would not exchange a simple sack of oak, and a humble hand grind with all of the treasures of Shiraz.”

The only remaining work of Mir Nowruz is his book of poems that was gathered for the first time by Esfandiyar Ghazanfari Omarayi and published in 1347 SH.
