Birjand Natural History Museum was established based on a decision made in 2002 and was launched in the Shokatabad Garden in Birjand. The establishment of this museum was the result of a collaboration between the Endowment and Charity Affairs Administration of Birjand City and the Board of Trustees of Shokatabad Mansion and Garden. Birjand Natural History Museum is the second museum established in this city after the Martyrs Museum, with the participation of other state organizations. The restoration and organization of the building where the museum is currently located began in 1999 and was completed in 2003.
Birjand Natural History Museum encompasses various sections such as the Museum of Sciences, Natural History, and Traditional Dining. Over 1,000 types of fossils and more than 150 species of taxidermied animals and birds are on display for enthusiasts here. Most of these creatures belong to the native climate of Khorasan and the east of country as well. The presence of desert and mountainous climates simultaneously in South Khorasan Province has provided a suitable habitat for many rare and environmentally important species. Various native birds, reptiles, and mammals from the desert and mountain climates are showcased in the Birjand Natural History Museum.
One of the notable features of Birjand Natural History Museum is its location within one of the largest and most beautiful historical gardens. Another appealing feature is its proximity to the main shopping centers in the city, allowing visitors to also visit the shopping center for souvenir shopping after their museum visit.
