One of the natural attractions of Isfahan province is Gavkhuni Wetland which plays a pivotal role in the life of the area. Originated from the heights of Zard Kuh Bakhtirai and passing through the Bakhtiari area and Isfahan city in the east of Isfahan, at the end of Roudasht village, Zayandeh Rud flows into the Gavkhuni Wetland. Gavkhuni Wetland is geographically located in the central plateau of Iran and a part of this basin is placed in Yazd province.

Fortunately, this wetland has not been manipulated by the human because of its difficult accessibility and as a result, its beautiful nature remains pristine and untouched. With regard to its name, it is stated that Gavkhuni is composed of two parts: Gav means large and Khuni stems from Khan which means well. In fact, it is the transformed form of the world Gavkhani which refers to a large well. However, some believe that well is the other name of the old Isfahan which was later changed into Gabi, Gay and Ji. And Khani means pond and reservoir in Pahlavi and they are altogether the same as the water basin of Isfahan city.

Nonetheless, the wetland is one of the most wonderful and pristine natural landscapes in this region. Gavkhuni wetland is placed 167 kilometers southeast of Isfahan and it is one of the nineteen international wetlands in Iran. The nearest village to this wetland is the historical and touristic city of Varzaneh. Placing in the neighborhood of the Varzaneh desert, the basin has created a spectacular scenery in the intersection of water and land. The wetland is about thirty kilometers away from the city.

The wetland spreads in an area of approximately 476 square kilometers with its deepest part to reach one meter and a half. One of the most pleasant sceneries we can talk about in this wetland is the migration of birds. As the cold season begins, thousands of migratory birds come here from the cold northern parts. Gavkhuni wetland is also the host of migratory birds flying from the south. Therefore, whatever season you decide to travel to this place, it is likely to watch these amazing landscapes. In addition to these birds, there are a lot of wild animals here such as bighorn sheep, rabbit, turtle, Rüppell's fox, goat and bats. A variety of plants like bulrush, algae and haloxylon also exists in this place, however, the surrounding salt areas do not allow the growing of plants on the other side of the wetland. If you come here to see Gavkhuni wetland, do not miss Kavir trekking in Varzaneh. Taking a visit to the old bridge of Varzaneh and Isfahan dovecotes will make your travel more memorable.

To reach Gavkhuni wetland, you should first come to Varzaneh and then, after about twenty minutes, you will arrive in your destination. The best season for taking a visit to this natural attraction is spring, while the autumn and the early winter are also acceptable.
