Sistan and Baluchestan is the vastest province of Iran located in south east. This legendary land is divided into northern and southern regions. Today the northern part consists of Sistan and the southern part, Baluchestan. Carpets of this city are one of the most authentic products of Iran. They are made in both regions of Sistan and Baluchestan. In Baluchestan Kelims are woven more than carpets, and in Sistan small carpets or rugs are more common. One of these rugs are called “Baluch Sistan” and are woven by both Baluch nomads who inhabit by the riverside of Hirmand, and villagers of Sistan. Hand woven Sistan carpets have unique traits that have been affected by the surrounding nature.
The colors and patterns of this carpet are also affected by natural, cultural and historical setting of this area. These patterns are created by geometric and semi geometric motifs, and colorful yarns with various hues of red, dark blue, light and dark green, yellow, brown, black and white are used. They are made using asymmetrical knots on horizontal looms. One of the famous patterns is called “Mashhad-Baluch”.
In this design the body of the carpet is divided into parts by grid lines. In the center of each grid a diamond motif is knitted. Their background is usually red and the lines of the grids are Blue. It is woven by long silk-like threads. People of Baluch also copied from the Afhshar clan and made rugs decorated with motifs of birds or “Morgh”. One of them is the Peacock. In this design, four peacocks, in red and green, are surrounding a small diamond-like paisley in the center, all in a dark blue background. The motifs of four peacocks can be repeated in the carpet.
The most generic motifs of Baluch rugs that are made from memory are Nectarine blossom, “Se Kheshti” and “Sang-e Choli” (the name of one of the most powerful clans of Baluch) that is more common in center and east of Khorasan province, “Fath-ol-llah Khani”,”Ya’ghub Khani”, “Dokhtar-e Ghazi”, “Gavazni” or deer, “Cheshmeh Gol”, “Madad Khani”, “Chahar Morgh”, “Tavoussi” or peacock, “Keshmiri”, “Gav-o Borj”, “Ashrafi” blossom, “Barg-e Taki” and “Almond” blossom.
