Mohammad-Taqqi Bahar (Tehran)

Mohammad-Taqqi Bahar, son of Haji Mirza Mohammad Kazem Sabouri, the Malek o-Sho’ara of Astan Quds Razavi. He was born in 1265 SH in Mashhad. Since his father was the Malek o-Sho’ara (literally meaning king of poets) of the Shrine of Imam Reza, he used to take his son with him every time he went to gatherings and circles and introduced him with literal environments and their people. Therefore, Mohammad-Taqi became familiar with people very soon, and gradually became known amongst them.

It was during the early struggles of the Persian Constitutional Revolution that his father passed away in Mashhad. Young Bahar, who was now well-known by the virtuous and scholars, was given the position of Malek ol-Sho’ara by the order of Mozafar ol-Din Shah Qajar. Despite the fact that he held a position that demanded him to stay away from political activities and currents, his liberal nature prevented him from remaining silent. At the time, the newspapers Tous and Khorasan were secretly published in Mashhad. He began collaborating with them under a pseudo-name. He achieved the license of Nobahar newspaper that was closed many times. Each time Bahar reopened it with a new name.

After some time, Bahar was chosen by the local people of Kalat and Daregaz as a member of the constitution and moved from Mashhad to Tehran. In Tehran he continued his activities as a journalist, and in addition to the publication of Nobahar, developed his collaboration with other newspapers. In the spring of 1303 he gave a fiery speech in the constitution. As he was about to exit the building, Vaez Qazvini, the manager of Ra’d newspaper in Qazvin that looked like him, was shot and killed. Bahar wrote a grim poem about this sad incident.

Some of his most known works are ballads and songs of Bahar-e Delkash, Bad-e Saba Bar Gol Gozar Kon, Ey Shekasteh Del, Ey Kabooter, Gar Raghib Ayad, Iran Hengame Kar, Morghe Sahar, Be Esfahan Ro and etc. His most important literature work is his Diwan or book of poems. Some of the experts believe that after Jami, there has been no poet as smooth and comprehensive as Bahar. In the summer of 1329 SH he wrote his last poem and closed his book. On Ordibehesht 2, 1330 SH Mohammad-Taqi Bahar passed away. His tomb is located in Shemiran of Tehran, in the garden of Zahir od-Dowleh cemetery.
