Golab (Rose Water)

Golab (Rose Water) is the extraction from Mohammadi flowers (a kind of Rose) that obtains using special local and traditional techniques. Iran is about seven thousand years old in planting Mohammadi flowers and has always been the origin of Golab. There are many Mohammadi flower gardens in Kashan and its surrounding areas that the purest and most fragrant roses of Iran obtain from these desert and arid regions. Ghamsar region has long been known as Golab and is one of the most important centers for growing Mohammadi in Iran. This region has one of the unique and original methods of distilling and producing roses. The golab obtained from this region is considered to be the best one in the world. The rose of this region, in addition to being used to perfume religious spaces inside Iran, also being used to wash the house of God every year on the ninth of Dhu al-Hijjah.

The rose water industry requires skill and observance of some points, and today this is done in most parts of the vast land of Iran. Many rose pickers and rose sellers dedicate their homes to the storage or sale of rose water.  According to the volume of their work and access to running water or the national network for water, they make changes to the period of Golab-Giri (Rose-Water process).

With the onset of the Golab-Giri season, people who pick flowers begin early in the morning, before sunrise. They believe that flowers have more fragrance before sunrise.

The rose water process is done by filling large pots with rose petals and water and placing them on a pile of firewood, then the rose is obtained using traditional machines and distillation methods. In the past, for Golab-Giri ceremonies, special pots and Mohammadi flowers were taken along the rivers and start Golab-Giri while reciting religious prayers.

The presence of Mohammadi flower gardens, the beauty of the color, and the pleasant aroma of this flower before separating from the branch, observing the rose-picking and how to obtain rose water in the special seasons have attracted countless tourists from all over Iran and the world to watch this traditional ceremony. In addition to the development of the tourism industry, it creats jobs and increase the economy in the region.
