Abu Musa is the extreme southern island of the Persian Gulf located 213 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas. In is spread in an area of 12.8 square kilometers. Abu Musa island is the central part of a city with the same name which composed of a group of islands named Greater and Lesser Tunbs, Farur, Siri and Faroor Koochak all in the southern Hormozgan province. It is 222 kilometers waterway away from Bandar Abbas. It is located at approximately 50 minutes and 14 degrees east longitude and 3 minutes and 50 degrees east latitude. The city is divided into two parts: 1. Tunb with Tunb as its center; 2. The central part with Abu Musa as its center. Also, Abu Musa is the least populated city of Hormozgan. Due to its strategic political position, Abu Musa contains different facilities and installations like municipality, governorship, post and telephone office, Guard Corps and morgue. In addition, the government has constructed some residential houses in order to accommodate a number of families living in the island. The surface of the island can be naturally and geographically divided into two main parts:
Northern Part: this part is complex and almost mountainous in which Halva mount at the height of maximum 110 meters is placed in the center of its northern half. In this part, there are sometimes valley-like cuts stretching from the high rocks to the shores of the sea. In some areas, palm trees can be seen.
Southern Part: this part is almost flat and simple like a sand plain stretching from east to west. The old maritime station and the current Bumian village are placed on two southeastern and southwestern parts. Due to its natural location, it is warmer and more humid than Bandar Abbas. Its rainfall, which is mostly seasonal and tropical falling in the form of instant and temporary showers, is 53.3 mm per year. The average air temperature is 28.2 degrees celsius and the annual humidity is 74%.
Presently, due to the geopolitical and political restrictions, hosting tourists are highly limited to Norouz and just the relatives of the citizens who can stay in their private homes, are allowed to travel to this island. The only existing accommodation infrastructure is a ninety-person guest house belonged to Physical Education Organization and facilities provided by the state for its own employees. Recreational facilities for using the beach are already prepared by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Organization but not yet exploited because of operational problems.
