Caves are holes that have been made through dissolving rocks in water and melting the snow over millions of years. Caves had been the natural shelters in the past for protecting the man from wild animals and inclement weather.
Many caves have been found around Tehran city among which Burnik cave near Herandeh village is extremely beautiful.
Burnik consists of two parts: “Bur” that means a safe place and “Nik” that means good; totally, Burnik means a good safe place that is completely relevant to the usage of this area for the caveman.
To reach this memorial of nature, you must leave Tehran for Firouzkuh. 15kilometers before the southwest of Firouzkuh, there is the beautiful village of Herandeh that is itself one of the most appropriate places for an excursion in summers with a river full of water namely Namroud and its pleasant garden alleyways. Local people in this village speak in Gilaki dialect and they live through agriculture, animal husbandry and producing handicrafts, however, the main product of this people is potato.
You will reach Burnik village after walking less than two hours toward the south. Going down 150stairs, your travel is started to three interconnected halls in the cave that have different heights. With 3500meters length, Burnik cave is considered to be the longest cave around the capital.
Once upon a time, Burnik Cave had been the residence of caveman and potteries which have been discovered from there confirm this statement. Each hall had a different use. The first hall or the exterior hall, was the main residence for those who live there. The second one reaches the third hall through a steep slope that is the deepest part of the cave in so far as its depth is approximately 20meters in some parts.
The cave is geologically and paleontologically worthwhile with anticlines, stalagmites and stalactites in white, yellow and pink colors.
