The Iron Bridge is a bridge over the Aras River in the border town of Jolfa. Located in the eastern part of Jolfa, this bridge was constructed in 1913 by the Tabriz-Jolfa Railroad Company under the supervision of an engineer named Treskiniski. It was completed in 1914. The length of the bridge is approximately 110 meters and its width is about 5.5 meters.
One of the prominent features of this bridge is its suspension design, as well as its ability to expand and contract in the cold and hot seasons. This bridge serves as a rail connection between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
What attracts many people to visit this bridge is yet something else. Years ago, on Shahrivar, 1320 SH (1941), a historical event at this location added value to this bridge. During World War II, when the Soviet army intended to cross the Iranian borders, three dedicated border guards who were responsible for protecting this area prevented them from entering the country. Amazingly, these three guards resisted the Soviet army for two full days, and their full control over the bridge empowered them to pull back the Russian army. Eventually, these three brave guards, Abdollah Shahriari, Mohammad Rathi Hashemi, and Malek Mohammadi, were defeated by the Russian army and martyred. The enemy commander, who was impressed by their courage and patriotism, ordered to bury them with respect next to the bridge. Their graves are now considered a symbol of bravery and courage for our youth. If you intend to visit the areas near the Aras River, stop by the Iron Bridge to show respect to these heroes and be proud of your Iranian heritage.
