East Azerbaijan is one of the most western provinces of Iran mainly inhabited by Turk tribes. Having a cold and mountainous weather and embracing the Qaradagh or Arasbaran mountains, this province had been the settlement of nomadic tribes from the past. The name of nomads comes always with a variety of natural and traditional foods, costumes and rituals, local dances and also the traditional and local clothes of people. This province has been one of the pioneering regions in introducing its traditional clothes, in so far as the Skill of Sewing the Local and Traditional Clothes of East Azerbaijan has been inscribed on the index of intangible heritage in the Iran National Heritage List. It shows the importance of the conservation of this invaluable heritage. The clothes of men and women in this region are introduced in three parts of headgear, clothing and footwear mostly in Turkish language. East Azerbaijan’s women, especially those who live in villages and nomads, wear a long dress with round collar that is called Kevink. Don is another kind of feminine dress that is worn along with Tuman (a long skirt) or Shaliteh (a short skirt). Jeliqa is a short sleeveless vest they wear over their dress. Yal, Khood, Jaan Kevink and Tarkevinki are other feminine clothing in this region. The nomadic women of East Azerbaijan province choose among various headgears for covering their head and hairs: a kind of beret, Kalaqe scarf, shawl or kerchief, Chalma-Shamakhi (a kind of headband), Chapi (scarf), Alacharshap (colorful Chador), Uorband (mask) and Chadra (Chador). Different kinds of traditional socks and shoes such as Galesh, Charoogh, Ghirmizi, Bashmagh and Takgoon are famous among the feminine footwear of East Azerbaijan province. It also should be said that most of feminine clothes in this region is produced in bright color and they are patterned. Azerbaijan men wear a kind of boot namely Labchin or Dolama, Takgoon, Gelaseh Bashmakh, Sharoogh and Choost. Their special pants have tight legs and its upper parts are loose. The main cloth of this men is named Doozmali Arghalikh that is a kind of folded shirt in form of a blouse. The lower part of this clothing has a skirt form. They have different headgears that are called Boork or Papakh in Turkish language: Dari Boork, Kapi, Kampaboork or knitted hats, Ka’che Boork or felt hats, Doorgeh Boork or a hat made of lambskin, Yoon Brook or wool hat.
