Rey is one of the oldest cities in Iran. this Historical city is one of the tourism poles of Iran and host of the Shah Abdol-Azim Shrine. Ibn-e Babawayh Mausoleum is another important monument in this city that the antiquity of its current building is about 200 years.

In addition, Ibn-e Babawayh is a big cemetery in Rey and a house for tombs of many celebrities of Iran. the name of this cemetery has been driven from the name of Mohammad Ibn-e Babawayh or Al-Shaykh al-Saduq, one of the Shia’ jurists. The tomb of this great faqih is placed in the same cemetery. Abolhasan Jelveh, another Shia’ scholar, was also buried in this place near the tomb of Al-Shaykh al-Saduq.

The mausoleum of Ibn-e Babawayh was constructed under the reign of Fathali Shah Qajar. However, some believe that the construction date of the original cemetery backs to Sassanid period that was ruined after a while because of the flood.

Until approximately 20 years ago there were many family tombs in Ibn-e Babawayh cemetery each had given a beautiful appearance to this place through unique architectural decorations. However, most of them were ruined due to the project of Celebrities’ Garden and now the surface of the cemetery is almost flat.

Among those who were buried in this cemetery, Gholamreza Takhti, Ali Akbar Dehkhoda, Mohammad Ali Foroughi, Rajab Ali Khayyat, Hossain Behzad and colonel Mahmoud Iravani should be referred. Besides, the tomb of Dr. Seyed Hossain Fatemi, Javad Fazel, Mirzadeh Eshghi and Sheikh Musa are located in this complex. The cemetery of Ibn-e Babawayh is also the host of martyrs of 30 Tir, 1331 SH. The tomb of Rahim Moazzen Zadeh Ardabili, the famous muezzin of Iran and the Islamic world, has been placed in this cemetery, too.

The cemetery was inscribed on the list of national heritages of Iran in 1375 SH; a cemetery which can be really called the museum of Iran history and celebrities, especially in the last century.

If you plan to visit Tughrul Tower, it is highly recommended to see this cemetery, too, because it is located exactly near the old tower of Rey. In order to reach Ibn-e Babawayh, the best choice is using metro and you will get off in Shahr-e Rey station.
