History of Babol Museum

Known also as Babol Treasure, the History of Babol Museum was established in 1375 SH in the place of the former municipality building of this city. The building dates back to Pahlavi period and it was built in 1307 SH. This very beautiful mansion is two-story with a white external view and a gable roof. The building was inscribed on the index of Iran National Heritages in 1345 SH. The activities of this museum are defined in three parts of archaeology, ethnography and wooden memorials. The department of archaeology includes itself two parts of prehistory and Islamic.

There are many historical works that have been transferred to the museum from all around Iran such as the discovered potteries of Tappe Hesar in Damghan, Sialk in Kashan, Susa and etc. the oldest item in the part of prehistory is a red pottery ware related to fifty thousand years before Christ. Interesting among the valuable items of this part are potteries of Turang Tappe and other regions of Mazandaran related to the third millennium BC.

The main feature of these potteries is their gray color. In addition to the pottery objects, there are also some bronze and stone items like weapons and wares kept in this museum most of which related to Parthian and Sassanian dynasties discovered from regions such as Behshahr, Sari, Qaem Shahr, Neka and Nour. Like other ethnography museums, in the department of ethnography of Babol Museum, the local cloths, culture, rituals and different jobs are on display, too. In addition, local handicrafts of Mazandaran like Chador Shab Bafi, Zari Bafi and pottery making are exhibited.

In the third part, the visitors are facing with some wooden memorials that belonged to the Mazandaran province; door, window and grave box are among the objects kept in this part most of which are decorated with wood carving, fretwork and latticework techniques. The oldest object in this collection is the inscription of the grave box of Imamzadeh Ali located in Savad Kuh dating back to more than five hundred years. Two wooden bundles of a carved door belonged to Shahzade Reza placed in one of the Babol villages are other valuable objects in this part. The museum of Babol History is located in Modarres Street in the city.
